I began serving the church on Easter Monday 2010. The Pastoral Search Committee is busily reading candidate profiles, so the congregation hopes to call their new pastor by the end of 2011.
The Cheney United Church of Christ is a project oriented congregation that pulls together to accomplish many and varied tasks. The present church facilities were constructed and finished by Cheney UCC members and friends. Other projects, in our past, include the Habitat for Humanity duplex we initiated and supported in conjunction with other Cheney churches and community organizations. Projects to support the congregation and community of Cheney included our fall bazaars, Crop Walk, Crosswalk lunches, Feed Cheney, and the clothing bank. We are a diverse intergenerational mix of people who respond with eagerness when needs develop.
We are a caring community of believers with a strong sense of fellowship. We take advantage of every opportunity to gather and socialize. We Hang the Greens to decorate the Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall for the Christmas season. We eat Easter breakfast after sunrise services. The Men’s Breakfast, ice cream social, dining out groups, church picnic, and birthday cake Sunday are all examples of our desire to come together to mix and mingle.
The youth of our church have a history of active participation in the life of the congregation.
Outreach is two-fold at Cheney UCC. The local arm includes occasional services for the Cheney Care Center, providing an operation center for the Cheney Outreach Program, giving facilities to be used by the Scouts, Feed Cheney and the clothing bank. Globally, we consistently contribute to OCWM (Our Church’s Wider Mission) and support individuals who travel on missions to other countries by collecting school supplies, books and health items. We have long been financial supporters of the Heifer Project, and Mount Selinda in Manicaland, Zimbabwe.
If you think Cheney UCC might be a good fit for you, please come visit! I would welcome a call or an e-mail.
I serve the church half-time, so my normal schedule is:
· Sunday mornings for worship and coffee hour
· Mondays in the office 1pm-9pm
· Tuesdays in the office 5pm-9pm
· Sermon writing at home later in the week
Of course, I’ll be present other times if there’s a wedding, funeral, special occasion, emergency, etc. I live on the west side of Spokane, and can be in Cheney in 20 minutes. I can be reached anytime at joansulser@gmail.com or on my cell phone.
Now for a little about me … I grew up in Illinois, was an English major at a small college in Iowa, earned my Master of Library Science at U of Illinois, and worked as a high school librarian for seven years before changing careers. In 1988, I received my Master of Divinity from Yale. I served as a UCC minister in Massachusetts for two years and in Wisconsin for 18 years, before moving to Spokane in October 2008 for my husband’s job. I have served churches as large as 1,700 members and as small as 80 members. I like to read, travel, walk our dog (Karma, a 4-year-old Labradoodle), eat out and watch movies.
Wherever you are on life’s journey, you are welcome at Cheney UCC!
