Get Involved

We offer a number of ways to get involved in the activities of the church, our conference and the wider community.  You do not need to be a member to join in any of the activities, since we welcome everyone as either a member or a friend and believe that “God is still speaking” to everyone

Community Outreach

Cheney UCC is a congregation dedicated to making the world a better place through committed acts of Christian service.  Together, we support projects internationally, nationally, and locally that seek to alleviate human suffering and improve societal conditions of poverty, hunger, homelessness, and disease.  Past projects include offerings for One Great Hour of Sharing and Neighbors in Need, support for our denominational mission activities around the world, and local work through the cooperative social service organization Cheney Outreach.  We have collected items for Church World Service Health Kits, packed “care packages” for service men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan, and raised funds to send local needy children to church camp.  Our building is frequently used for community service groups, and we sponsor a Boy Scout Troop that meets weekly.

Over the years, our congregation has been actively involved with Habitat for Humanity, sending our youth group on summer trips to build houses and in the 1990’s spearheading the building of a duplex for Habitat here in Cheney.  Our members are actively involved in volunteer activities in Cheney, and many serve in leadership positions in local service organizations.

We have recently completed a mission project begun in 2001 in response to the tragedies of 9/11 by sponsoring Muslim students from Azerbaijan who came as high school exchange students, lived with members of our congregation, and eventually completed university studies with the financial, material, moral, and spiritual support of our congregation.  It was our hope to build a bridge with the Muslim world though person to person relationships.  Three young men from Azerbaijan were sponsored by our congregation, and two completed bachelor’s degrees at Eastern Washington University.

Cheney UCC is a congregation eager to respond to need. We have sponsored fundraisers for families facing extraordinary circumstances, and been quick to respond to immediate disasters and needs. We understand that to follow Jesus is to reach out to others. We take to heart the UCC motto, “To believe is to care. To care is to do.”

Special Services

We hold special services during Holy Week, on Easter, during the Christmas season and many other times of the year.  Participation in and assistance with these services is always appreciated.  Those who involve themselves find it rewarding and inspiring.  See the Calendar Page to find any that interest you, and feel free to join in.

Music Program
We enjoy the music that abounds in our services through an active choir.  We are blessed to have a number of talented musicians and vocalists who enrich our church life with special music and even musical productions such as “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Godspell,” which are enjoyed by the entire community.  If you have musical talent, we welcome you to participate in any of these activities.  If you just enjoy music, you will be pleasantly surprised by the quality of our music program.

Committee Service

There are 20 standing committees that undertake much of our recurring activity. One hundred and twenty members and friends participate in the committee activities and we are always happy to have more help and participation in them.

Conference Activities

We have members involved in many levels of the Pacific NW UCC Conference and a delegation from our congregation attends the annual  conference meeting each year.  See the link to the Pacific NW Conference Website for more details on the many activities our Conference is involved with and ways to get involved in them.

Social Interaction and Networking

All the things we do together have the significant side-benefit of getting to know and work with other Christians in the community with common concerns. The quality and diversity of that social interaction and networking is a hallmark of our congregation and we think you will agree once you get to know us.
